Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

The light from a cosmetic laser penetrates the outer layer of skin, in this case targeting the root of body hair at the follicle. The light gets absorbed by the pigment in the hair, heating up the hair and the surrounding follicle, damaging the hair growing system. Over a few weeks, the follicle dies, and no new hair production grows.

The Icon laser uses two heads for hair removal, the MaxR™ and the MaxRs™. The difference between the 2 is size. The MaxR covers wide areas, such as arms and legs, while the MaxRs treats smaller spots, like above the lip or individual coarse hairs. Lasers work best when the wavelength used matches the melanin pigment in the patient’s skin. CynoSure’s Skintel® Melanin Reader™ measures each patient’s skin. The Icon laser is then adjusted precisely, assuring the best hair removal performance.

What can I expect from a laser hair removal treatment?

Sessions using the Icon laser vary from just a few minutes for small areas to about half an hour for larger areas. The sensation of laser exposure is like a mild snap from an elastic band. There’s minimal discomfort and no recovery time after treatment. Laser hair removal suits any part of the body, except around the eyes, and the Icon laser adjusts for nearly any skin and hair color. Typically, patients have several treatments, since follicles are vulnerable only during the hair growth cycle, which varies with each hair. Every hair removal treatment follows a plan best suited to individual patients.

Are there risks involved with laser hair treatments?

If there's any reaction to treatment, it typically takes a form of mild sunburn, with redness and swelling in the treatment area. Some patients form new follicles over time, but this is usually several years after hair removal treatment.
